Pope joins Twitter

The Vatican has officially joined the Twitterverse, as Pope Benedict XVI sent out his first official tweet Wednesday.

“Dear Friends, I just launched News.va Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.”

The Pope, using the handle @news_va_en, sent the tweet from his iPad to coincide with the feast day of St Peter and Paul on Wednesday.

He also announced the launch of a new multimedia web portal, News.va. The website includes Twitter updates, YouTube videos, Flickr photos and Facebook links. It’s now available in English and Italian, but more languages will be added.

Wednesday also marks the 60th anniversary of Benedict’s ordination as a priest in the Catholic Church.

The Vatican already has Facebook and YouTube accounts. Currently, it has 33,000 Twitter followers, but doesn’t follow anyone.
