Below is a list (courtesy of Peel Regional Police):

For families heading on vacation:

  • Cancel newspaper delivery

  • Ask a family member or trusted friend/neighbour to check in on your home daily; ask them to pick up flyers and mail
  • Use at least two timers to turn the lights on and off
  • Turn off the garage door opener
  • Secure your valuables

Tips for parents/children:

  • Know what your child/teen is doing online
  • Set up parental controls on your computers/electronic devices
  • Put the computer in a public area of your home
  • Monitor the amount of time your child spends on the Internet
  • Make sure your child knows he/she should never give out personal info
  • Supervise if your child or teen uses a Web cam, digital camera or video camera
