RIM to cut as many as 2,000 jobs

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has announced they will be cutting as many as 2,000 positions as part of their cost optimization plan.

The cuts will amount to nearly 11% of RIM’s total workforce, which is approximately 20,000 strong.

The cuts didn’t come as complete surprise, as last month RIM made the announcement there would be an unspecified number of job cuts.

Along with the cuts comes the news that that BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer Don Morrison will retire. Morrison had been on medical leave and has been with RIM for more than ten years. He will be replaced by Thorston Heins.

The news comes after RIM announced in June that it had missed its adjusted profit forecasts and was reducing its financial predictions for the full year.

Decreased sales of the BlackBerry is one of the main reasons why RIM has seen reduced profits in recent times. An increase in sales of the iPhone and Android have cut into the Canadian firm’s share of the market, hurting their profits and lowering shipment numbers.

It is so far unclear where the job cuts will come from.
