Showdown on MMA: Midweek mashup

Life has returned to a normal state post-UFC 133 in Philadelphia, but as I sit and conduct some research at home, the MMA world outside of my confines continues to produce a variety of stories that have made headlines.

My second visit to “The City of Brotherly Love” was a memorable one. I met legendary boxer Bernard Hopkins, and while I simply extended my hand to thank him for the many memories, little did I know it would have spawned an interview I will never forget. The master pugilist has also evolved into a savvy promoter, with many of his answers tailor-made for the consumption of a hungry public, who often yearn to hear what a future Hall of Fame boxer has to say about Mixed Martial Arts.

Throughout fight week, Team UFC Connected spoke with a variety of MMA athletes, learning an incredible amount of information that may never make it to television. While most of it is considered “off the record” type of information, I do know I can use this knowledge in the future.

A few examples, if I’m craving fast food from a specific American chain, I can call on Chad Mendes to make the right “combo” selection. To garner a six-pack on my torso, I simply need Rashad Evans next to me, as UFC make-up artist Suzy Q will ensure all lines will be symmetric, defined and enhanced.

While enjoying an evening on a street patio with Team Ortiz, it’s probably best that you give BJJ Coach Ricardo Abreu room and space, and if anyone within 20 feet decides to smoke, you better inform them that it may not be a good idea.

I could go on and on about the numerous daily events that had us in stitches, but it’s best I simply move forward to more pressing issues — if not, I may have to explain why Rory (Ares) MacDonald believes I don’t need to shave my head anymore, and that Evans is jealous of my lack of hair — citing God as my barber. But I digress…

Evans confirmed his status as the No. 1 light heavyweight in the world, paving the way for a grudge match title shot vs. champion Jon (Bones) Jones, or an anticipated rematch with Quinton (Rampage) Jackson, should the latter emerge victorious vs. Bones. Either way, this is a win-win situation for the UFC, as pay-per-view numbers will be strong for either matchups.

As for MacDonald, (I said the same thing after Georges St-Pierre defeated Thomas Denny right before my eyes at UCC 12 and when Jones defeated Andre Gusmao in 2008) he will one day wear UFC gold. I don’t often say that about fighters but from a very early stage, there was something about these fighters that convinced me to make these bold predictions. Mind you, my forecasting of Rory’s championship aspirations started after his loss to Carlos Condit. Even in defeat, I firmly believe he will live and learn from his error(s); many of which will help sharpen the sword that is his will to win.

For those wondering about my thoughts about what’s next for many of the winners and losers from UFC 133, just watch this week’s episode of UFC Connected — parts one, two and three are now online.

Latest MMA Headlines

–I’d like to see Rory face Josh Koscheck next, but it appears that Jon Fitch may be next for MacDonald, who is also hoping for a rematch with Condit in the very near future. Kos wants to compete at 185 lbs, but I wonder if MacDonald will tempt him to stay at 170 lbs.

–Denis Hallman’s choice of ring attire was the byproduct of a bet he lost with a teammate. He said he’d do it again, but conceded that “Uncle Dana” would likely not entertain the idea.

–I like the next UFC Primetime series likely showcasing GSP vs. Nick Diaz, but to address all the questions: No, I did not make the request to the UFC, nor am I responsible for them deciding to do it. In fact, I never even thought of suggesting it.

–There’s a good chance that Dan Henderson will make his way back into the UFC. Dana hinted at it, and I hope it happens. To be honest though, I’ll believe it when I see it.

–The fight outside of the cage between Golden Glory and Zuffa is unfortunate for the fans but understandable from a business perspective. Alistair Overeem should still be in the tournament and Marloes Coenen should still be allowed to fight for Strikeforce, but what’s at play here is a stake in the MMA promotions business. There is a line being drawn in Japan, with Zuffa on one side and Golden Glory on the other. I’ll have more on this over the next few days, but a culmination of more checks on the “Con” side of the page over the “Pro” side is what triggered this chain of events.

–The Flyweight division is not expected to be added to the UFC roster until early 2012. It’s unfortunate but it’s a reality. In the meantime, allow me to prep you with the world’s top 125-pounder Ian (Uncle Creepy) McCall as he takes on Darrell (The Mongoose) Montague, last Friday night at Tachi Palace Fights 10.

–For those hoping that Nate Marquardt’s BAMMA debut would be against Paul Daley, think again.

–Mike Swick is out vs. Erick Silva at UFC 134 in Rio, and will be replaced by Shooto Champ Luis (Beicao) Ramos.

–Here’s the trailer for Randy Couture’s next movie The Setup. The movie also stars Bruce Willis and Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson.

–Ryan Couture is expected to make his cage return at Strikeforce Challengers 19 on September 23rd.

–Pro Elite’s Hawaii has released its trailer for their upcoming event. It’s a nice card, but my eyes will be focused on the debut of B.J. Penn’s brother, Reagan. The organization is rumoured to be on the verge of signing a network television deal, but promoter T.J. Thompson has squashed these rumours. Mind you, where there is smoke, there is often fire.

–There is no confirmed date or location yet for the James Toney vs. Ken Shamrock bout. Also, modified rules would see a standup should the fight hit the ground, and neither fighter produce a finish within thirty seconds. In essence, this is no longer an MMA bout and something completely different.

–Matt Hamill has announced his retirement. To The Hammer, thank you for the incredible ride, the memories and for being a class act, role model and ambassador to us all.
