The marine unit has recovered the body of a 48-year-old man who went missing while swimming near a boat in Lake Simcoe on Friday evening.
Sgt. Mcdoling has confirmed with CityNews that the victim is from the Toronto area.
He disappeared around 7 p.m. near Holmes Point Rd. north of Pefferlaw while swimming with friends.
“He was swimming in the area of the boat and went missing,” Mcdoling said.
His body was discovered around 5 hours later by members of the York Regional Marine Unit.
“He was on the bottom in approximately 12 feet of water, we sent a diver in to locate the male victim and he was brought into the boat,” Cst. Tom Saito, York Regional Marine Unit, grimly confirmed.
Cst. Saito said many of this year’s drownings have been preventable.
“This year there has been an extraordinary number of drownings unfortunately. There’s been quite a few preventable drownings this year, some have been on Lake Simcoe, but it’s province-wide this year.
“If people would just take that extra measure of placing a life jacket on it would prevent probably almost all drownings.”
The victim’s name has not been released.
