Some people feeling riot review should lay more blame

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It scolded the thugs who made a mess of downtown Vancouver on June 15th, but the review into the Stanley Cup riot didn’t really blame police or the mayor. Some people are wondering why the review wasn’t a little more pointed.

The review singles out mistakes; it suggests booze was too easy to get and the early crowds caught cops off-guard. It also says there were too many people — not too few police. On Vancouver streets, holding no one responsible except the rioters leaves at least a few people wondering what the review really achieved.

“It was kind of a waste of money,” says one man.

“From the report to the government to the police… nobody’s taking any accountability for anything,” a women tells us. “It’s just blaming somebody else; it’s somebody else’s fault. But nobody’s doing anything, so these guys are going to get the opportunity to do it all over again.”

From the start, there were concerns the tight deadline on the report might keep it from being a truly thorough one, but there was always the hope that the serious flaws it would surely find could be further reviewed later.

The report fills 400 pages and cost more than $300,000.

Rioters turning themselves in

The VPD’s new website with pictures of rioters posted on it has people feeling guilty.

Six people have come forward to admit their pictures are on the site. Nine others have been identified by visitors to riot2011.vpd.ca.

Investigators are working through another 225 tips.
