Forget ‘following:’ Facebook to let users ‘subscribe’

Facebook announced plans for a new feature Wednesday that will let users “subscribe” to news feeds from other members – even those they may not be friends with.

The company said in a blog post it will be rolling out the button to users over the next few days.

The new feature allows users to decide if they want to see all updates from their friends, some updates, or just important ones (such as someone announcing an engagement or a new job). It will also enable users to block posts about games (Farmville, anyone?)

The “subscribe” button will also allow users to share updates with people who aren’t friends through the option of setting posts as public.

Many are speculating these changes are in response to features incorporated in Google+, the company’s social networking feature.
