The NDP is promising to create a jobs commissioner if they win the provincial election on October 6.
Leader Andrea Horwath says the commissioner would look for alternatives when shutdowns and layoffs are announced.
Premier McGuinty, meanwhile is defending himself against Conservative accusations that he is not tough on crime.
He took aim at a Tory plan to put inmates to work outside of jails, saying it would put communities at risk.
Conservative Leader Tim Hudak is focusing on northern issues.
