Apple says iPhone 4S broke record with more than 1M single day pre-orders

The new version of the iPhone didn’t wow tech analysts but consumers still can’t wait to get their hands on Apple’s latest offering.
First day pre-orders for the iPhone 4S topped the one million mark on Friday. Apple released early sales figures on Monday.
The first orders broke the record set for the iPhone 4 last year when 600,000 people got on the list to get the device first.
“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in a news release Monday. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
The newest version of the iconic smartphone hits the stores in black and white this Friday. Apple Canada’s website lists a 16GB for $649.
News of strong sales sent Apple shares up 2.4 per cent, or $9 (US), to $378,80 in pre-market trading on Monday.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S last Tuesday after many had predicted, and hoped, the company would show off an iPhone 5.
The 4S, which looks virtually the same as the 4, sports a faster processor and a better camera.
Apple says this device provides “two times more power and up to seven times faster graphics.” A voice command feature, called Siri, is included in the American version, but isnt’ listed among the device’s features on the company’s Canadian site.
Company co-founder Steve Jobs died last week at the age of 56. Reports suggest he left behind plans for new versions of Apple devices.
