Martin Short will be a ‘Canada’s Got Talent’ judge

Legendary Canuck comedian Martin Short will be a judge on the new series Canada’s Got Talent and with more than four decades in showbiz under his belt, there’s probably no one more qualified to judge what it takes to be a star.

Short, a Hamilton native, is the first judge to be announced for the show, which hits the air in March 2012.

“I can’t wait, I think it’s going to be a riot,” The Second City and Saturday Night Live alumnus said on BT Thursday morning.

He said he’s excited to cross the country and said this gig will give him an opportunity to see parts of Canada he’s never visited before.

“I’ve never been to Halifax,” he said. CGT auditions wrapped up there Wednesday.

Canadians have been showing their stuff at auditions across the country for the past month in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.

Short said he’s not going to be the harsh judge, but rather “fun and loveable.”

“I think you can be charming and nice and crush (contestants’) dreams at the same time,” he said.

The Emmy award winning comedian, who created the popular characters Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick, received the Order of Canada in 1994 and got a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2000.

He’s also appeared in a number of hit Hollywood comedies, including Three Amigos, Father of the Bride and Mars Attacks.

The other judges will be announced in the coming days.
