Midtown fire sparks evacuation

Several people were forced out of their homes early Friday after a fire broke out at a drycleaners in midtown.
Firefighters were called to an address on Bayview Ave., near Millwood, around 3 a.m. after an apparent transformer explosion. The flames spread through some commercial properties and later moved to apartments above.
The fire is believed to have started at Leaside Cleaners.
Crews managed to get the blaze under control by around 4:30 a.m. and apartments above businesses hit by the flames were evacuated. There were no reports of injuries.
It’s not known yet when residents will be allowed back inside their homes.
