Report: Papelbon to sign with Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are closing in a four-year deal with free agent closer Jonathan Papelbon, according to multiple online reports.

The deal was first reported by Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly.

Earlier this week it appeared the Phillies were on the verge of re-signing closer Ryan Madson to a four-year deal worth $44 million, with an option for a fifth year.

Philadelphia has since denied those reports.

In Papelbon, Philadelphia would be getting arguably the best closer available on the free agent market. With the Boston Red Sox in 2011, the 31-year-old posted 31 saves with 87 strikeouts in 64.1 innings with a WHIP of 0.933.

Madson, also 31, saved 32 games for the Phillies in 2011 with 62 strikeouts in 60.2 innings with a WHIP of 1.154.
