Several museums to close in Ford’s next city budget

TORONTO, Ont. – Four of Toronto’s ten city-operated museums are set to get the axe when Mayor Rob Ford unveils his next city budget, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

The Star quotes sources who say among the cuts in Ford’s next budget will be the four museums, which should save the city approximately $1 million.

The four museums on the chopping block are the Market Gallery, located at 95 Front St., the Gibson House, located at 5172 Yonge St., Montgomery’s Inn, located at 4709 Dundas St. and the Zion Schoolhouse, located at 1091 Finch Ave.

The museums are operated by the city’s Culture Division, and the ten museums in total cost the city approximately $5.3 million a year, while they raise $1.3 million themselves through admissions and gift-shop sales.

Excluding the Market Gallery, located in downtown Toronto, the other three museums set to be closed are located in North York and Etobicoke.
