Nickelback performed at the Grey Cup halftime show on Sunday, garnering an online reaction that was much more muted than at the band’s showing at a Detroit Lions game earlier this week.
The Alberta band, who routinely sell out stadiums, are accustomed to jeers and even created a video mocking themselves and their detractors.
And on Sunday, that approach seemed to have worked.
“Nickelback @ Grey Cup – v.solid. Bashing them is cliche & overdone,” MP James Moore (@JamesMoore_org) tweeted.
Then, Maclean’s columnist Paul Wells (@InklessPW) joined in.
“Mocking a halftime show by Nickelback at a football game has got to be the lowest conceivable cost-of-entry into hipsterism,” he wrote.
“@InklessPW They’re not really my thing, but since when did banal driving rock become so very reviled?” Marcel DeCoste (@MCoste) replied.
“Precisely. ‘I condemn this spectacle because I would have chosen a band only 97% as predictable.’” Wells said.
“Of all the inappropriate places to program a rock band that sells millions of records, surely a large football game is the worst.”
