Striking YRT workers picket, delay buses again

Striking York Region Transit workers are picketing for the second time this week, delaying buses and rallying in three areas.

Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) set up their pickets outside a YRT station at Finch and Highway 404 and at a garage on Keele Street in Vaughan.

Buses are being held up for about five minutes in those locations.

The workers also set up a picket outside the YRT offices in Richmond Hill at Yonge Street and High Tech Road. A picketer was hit by a car there, but the person wasn’t hurt.

Police are investigating the incident.

Striking YRT workers also held pickets Tuesday, delaying buses at the Keele Street garage and at Finch station.

The transit strike is now in its fifth week. No new talks are scheduled.

The ATU locals 1587 and 113 represent the workers and they’re calling on the companies contracted out to run buses in York Region—First Canada, Miller Transit and Veolia—to submit to arbitration to end the strike.
