Father’s bail hearing delayed as search for baby continues

A man accused of abducting his infant son appeared in court briefly Wednesday as investigators continued an intense search for the child.

Police don’t believe the baby, who was born prematurely, is dead, but are very concerned for his well-being.

Ricky Doodhnaught, 31, was arrested at an address on Driftwood Avenue, near Jane and Finch, on Tuesday after allegedly fleeing with his nine-week-old son George before the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) could take the baby.

Detectives found no sign of the child at the Driftwood address.

Doodhnaught is charged with abduction in contravention of a custody order and police say he isn’t co-operating with investigators. He’s also facing two unrelated counts of theft under $5,000 in connection to alleged gas thefts. The man’s 60-year-old aunt Rita Nankali and 21-year-old cousin Victoria Munian are also facing obstruction and accessory after the fact charges.

In a Newmarket court on Wednesday, the judge ordered Doodhnaught not to have contact with them and a third woman named Susan Munian, who was also arrested at the Driftwood address Tuesday night.

Doodhnaught will remain in custody until his next court date on Dec. 13. The three women will make another court appearance Jan. 6, 2012.

Police and CAS workers went to Doodhnaught’s and his wife’s Vaughan home with a court order to take their two children on Nov. 24. The couple fled to a hotel, police said, where the mother was arrested on unrelated and outstanding warrants and one of the kids, an 11-month-old child, was taken into custody.

Doodhnaught escaped with the baby, police said.

“We’re pleading to anybody who has knowledge or who has care of George Doodhnaught … to please contact their local police department,” Det. Sgt. Larry Wilson of the York Regional Police homicide unit said.
