There’s no snow on the ground and it’s not cold, but officially it’s the first day of winter.
The forecast Thursday calls for cloudy skies and a high of 6 C in the GTA, but flurries may come overnight and into Friday.
Also known as the winter solstice, the first day of winter is when the sun is the farthest south of the equator. It’s also the shortest day of the year.
Contrary to popular belief, the Earth is closest to the sun during winter. It’s the tilt of the planet this time of year that makes the sun’s rays the weakest in the northern hemisphere.
The days will now gradually get longer until the first day of spring on March 20.
