Outbreak of C. difficile bacteria reported at Markham hospital

Several medical units are being affected by a C. difficile outbreak at the Markham Stouffville Hospital.
The outbreak was first declared on Dec. 20, making the hospital the region’s most recent to report an outbreak of the dangerous bacteria.
The medical and surgery units are affected, but a spokeswoman from the hospital stressed that the units have not been closed down.
Hospital officials say the hospital is still taking patients in both those units, and would not say how many patients have been infected
No staff or visitors have become ill, and the condition of any infected patients is unknown.
C. difficile is a common bacterial infection found in medical facilities. It can cause intestinal problems and sometimes be fatal.
Health officials say washing your hands is the best way to prevent an infection.
