Canada names women’s Fed Cup roster

MONTREAL — Rebecca Marino will lead a four-player Canadian team at the Fed Cup Americas Zone Group I zonal event at the end of the month.
The 21-year-old Vancouver player is coming off a breakthrough season on the WTA Tour. She reached a career-best ranking of No. 38 last July.
Marino will be joined by Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., at the Jan. 30-Feb. 4 event on clay courts in Curitiba, Brazil.
“I have confidence in the depth and experience of my team,” team captain Sylvain Bruneau said Tuesday in a release. “We are aiming for a spot in the World Group for 2013 and we will get there by taking one step at a time.”
Canada was relegated after a loss to Slovenia last April. Canada will be joined at the zonal event by teams from Argentina, the Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.
Teams will be split into two groups, with the winners of each group facing off for the chance to play in a World Group II playoff tie in April. The two lowest-ranking teams will be sent to Group II of the Americas Zone in 2013.
Marino, currently the world No. 64, had two wins and three losses in her Fed Cup debut last year. Dubois has a 21-8 record in Fed Cup play dating back to 2004.
Fichman is 14-3 in Fed Cup play while Wozniak (35-8) owns Canadian Fed Cup records with 28 singles wins and seven doubles victories.
