4 teens killed in Parry Sound crash identified

Ontario Provincial Police have identified the four people killed in a crash near Parry Sound as teens from Barrie and Sudbury.

Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, one of the teens, 18-year-old Jessica Chamberland of Barrie, was driving a Chevrolet Camaro south on Highway 69 in Shawanaga Township when she lost control of the car on the icy road and crossed into the oncoming lanes.

Two cars, a Honda Civic and a Chevrolet Optra, then hit the Camaro.

Both Chamberland, her passenger, Alyssa McKeown, 17, and the Civic driver Torry McIntyre-Courville, 18, of Sudbury, died at the scene.

One of the Civic passengers, 19-year-old Cole Howard of Sudbury, died in hospital. The other two, Nicholas Bradley, 19, and Connor Kennedy, 14, are in critical condition at Sunnybrook and Sick Kids hospitals.

The Optra driver, 58-year-old Josephine McKechnie, was treated at the West Parry Sound Health Centre and released. She was the only one in the car.

“It’s a very hard situation at any time of year, but especially when it’s so close to Christmas and the persons are so young,” OPP Staff Sgt. Ron Campbell told CityNews.

Police continue to investigate, and an autopsy will be performed Wednesday.

Also on Tuesday, three teens from the Renfrew area were killed in a crash on Highway 17 east of Sudbury.

Keegan Melville, 18, and Zabrina Rekowski, 19, were passengers in a westbound Ford minivan that crossed into the eastbound lanes and collided with an oncoming Jeep Cherokee. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the minivan, 19-year-old Hillary Afelskie, died in hospital Wednesday. A third passenger, Emily Olmstead, also 19, had non-life-threatening injuries.

The two Sturgeon Falls residents in the Jeep, 72-year-old Walter Rancourt and Patricia Rancourt, 71, are in hospital with serious injuries.
