Construction workers injured near York University

Two construction workers have been injured inside a subway tunnel being built by York University at Jane Street and Steeles Avenue.

Police tell 680News one of the workers was hit by a backhoe while in the launch shaft – an open pit 60 feet below ground.

The worker had to be lifted out of the shaft by a cage, and was then taken to hospital. However, TTC officials confirm the injuries are not serious.

The second worker also suffered minor injuries and did not need to be taken to hospital.

Only a few months ago, a worker was killed when a drilling rig collapsed in the same area.
