Toronto police laid drinking and driving charges against 146 of 2,552 drivers who were tested at RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks during the 2011 holiday season, the force says.
That represents one in every 20 drivers pulled over, and is more than the one in 33 drivers charged in 2010.
During the 37-day campaign, 26 drivers were charged with impaired driving.
The force said that it issued so-called warn-range suspension to one in every nine drivers during the spot checks. That compared with one in every 10 drivers in 2010.
In the Halton region, police said they stopped 17,396 vehicles at 84 spot checks in December 2011, made 67 drinking and driving offences and administered 564 roadside breath tests.
