KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Montreal Impact selected Andrew Wenger of Duke with the first pick in Thursday’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
Wenger captured the Hermann Trophy as the top player in NCAA soccer, and is known as a versatile defender/midfielder/forward.
The 21-year-old anchored Duke’s back line in his first two college seasons. He was made into a forward in his third season, scoring 17 goals and adding eight assists to lead the Blue Devils to an 11-8-3 record.
Duke made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The Vancouver Whitecaps selected University of Akron forward Darren Mattocks with the No. 2 pick, while the New England Revolution took UCLA midfielder Kelyn Rowe with the third pick.
Toronto followed with the fourth pick, taking UC Santa Barbara midfielder Luis Silva.
