Slippery road conditions in GTA

Winter is giving us a not so gentle reminder, Friday, that it does in fact exist.

Icy road conditions were reported in several areas of the GTA as a system packing cold Arctic air rolled into southern Ontario.

The sudden glaze of ice combined with the snow triggered crashes all over the GTA.

The OPP told 680News there have been over 60 collisions from Ancaster, Burlington, Oakville, Markham, Oshawa and into Niagara Region.

OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said the problem is, you won’t see the ice before you hit.

“Stay focused on your driving, slow down and leave room in between you and that vehicle in front of you because it is deceiving on the roads. It looks like they’re just wet, but [when] you actually get that little buildup or that light film of ice, it doesn’t much to lose control and spin out,” Sgt. Woodford said.

Drivers in Oakville and Mississauga told 680News the wet and slippery roads, combined with swirling light snow, make it very difficult to see the lane markings.

In Toronto, Myles Currie, director at the city’s Transportation Services, said a second round of salting was delayed because of the timing of the snow.

Toronto will receive about 2-3 centimetres of snow. The Niagara and Barrie areas could get up to 10 centimetres of snow, including lake-effect and snow squall activity.

We’ll need the woolies this weekend in the city — a high of only -8 C is forecasted for Saturday with bitterly cold windchills.
