Penguins’ Letang returns from concussion

Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang returned to practicing with the team on Tuesday. He has been medically cleared for contact and game play after being sidelined with a concussion.

The 24-year-old Montreal native was on pace for a career season, scoring three goals and recording 16 assists in 22 games as the quarterback of Pens’ power play, before missing considerable time with his head injury.

Letang’s last game appearance with the Penguins was nearly two months ago. The offensive defenceman suffered a broken nose and a concussion on Nov. 26 when he was hit by Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty. Letang memorably returned to score the overtime winner in that same contest.

Pacioretty was later suspended three games for his hit on Letang.

Although Letang will not play Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes, he has been skating hard in on-ice workouts with conditioning coach Mike Kadar and return to the lineup seems imminent.
