Peeping Tom spotted again at York University

Police are warning female students to be careful after they say a peeping Tom has been spotted at York University again after numerous other incidents earlier this month.

“We’re working closely with York University security trying to identify who this man is…We’re asking for the public’s assistance,” said Toronto police Cst. Tony Vella.

“It’s wrong. I don’t get it. I don’t think anybody gets it and I think that’s why there’s such a strong response to something like this, to an incident like this…There’s been increased security brought in with York security services. An increase in foot patrols, an increase in surveillance” said York University spokesperson Wallace Pidgeon.

Investigators say on Tues. Jan. 24 shortly before 9 p.m., a woman entered the washroom at Stacy Lecture Hall.

She noticed large shoes in one of the stalls that appeared to belong to a man. She quickly fled and activated the security alarm.

Police believe the same man is responsible all incidents.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, two women using a washroom at Curtis Lecture Hall said they saw a man reach under their stalls while holding a cell phone.

The women left the washroom, and the man fled.

Another woman reported a similar incident in another of the building’s washrooms around 8:30 p.m. She told police a man fled after she noticed him looking over her stall.

And a bulletin posted at York University says there was also an incident in the Scott Library where a man tried to take pictures of women with his camera phone on Jan. 6.

“I thought it was really creepy. But York is a publicly accessed campus, so sometimes you can’t help who gets onto campus,” said student Jess Mortin.

The suspect is described as brown , 21-23 years old, 6 feet tall, 185 pounds, with a square jaw, chinstrap beard, dark eyes and black hair.

He was wearing dark-blue or black jeans, flat brown or dark-green shoes with beige soles and two lines down the side, a dark-grey hoodie with a black jacket over the top and carrying a dark brown or black backpack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (416) 808-3100 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).
