CALGARY — Chinese speedskater Jing Yu of China set a world record in the women’s 500 metres at the world sprint championship on Sunday.
Jing became the first woman to go under 37 seconds with a time of 36.94 at the Olympic Oval. Jenny Wolf of Germany set the old record of 37.00 in 2009 at Salt Lake City.
It was the second world record to fall in as many days in Calgary. Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., lowered the world record in the women’s 1,000 metres on Saturday.
Jing, 26, is currently ranked third in the World Cup standings for the 500 metres.
She skated in the second-last pairing Sunday with Wolf. The German lost her footing in the opening 100 metres and although Wolf didn’t fall, she lost precious time.
Nesbitt was 10th in the race and was to skate another 1,000 metres later Sunday.
