Ford’s disapproval rating jumps after transit vote: poll

Mayor Rob Ford’s disapproval rating has skyrocketed following the defeat of his subway plan in council, according to a new poll.

The poll, by research firm Strategic Communications Inc., showed that 35 per cent of Toronto residents strongly disapprove of Ford’s performance on the job. That number was just 17 per cent last March.

The survey of 1,300 Toronto residents was conducted in the 48 hours following council’s decision last week to back Karen Stintz’s LRT plan.

The survey has a margin of error of +/-2.7%, 19 times out of 20, the company said.

But the same poll revealed that Ford’s approval rating has remained relatively steady since he was elected, with 27 per cent strongly approving of the job the mayor is doing.

“While Mr. Ford continues to have a core of strong support, his leadership is controversial as shown by the steady hardening of his disapproval ratings,” John Willis, Strategic Communications’ research director, said in a release.

“A high strong disapproval rate is a key political indicator for a politician in trouble.”
