An animal rights group wants to set up a roadside memorial sign for dead cows.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is asking the Manitoba government for permission to place a sign along Highway 5 near Carberry, about 170 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
That’s where 71 cows died after a semi collided with a train on Jan. 31.
The group is asking that the sign read “Careless Driving Costs Lives: In Memory of 71 Cows.”
Manitoba established a roadside memorial program for people killed in highway crashes in 2008.
The program, developed in co-operation with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, sees standardized signs placed along roadsides where someone had been killed by an impaired driver.
