VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Supreme Court judge says a Delta police officer’s testimony against RCMP Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson is admissible in court, and the family of Orion Hutchinson, who was killed in a crash in Tsawwassen, is relieved.
Orion’s mother Judith Hutchinson says evidence suggesting Robinson left the crash scene to take two nerve-calming shots of vodka is crucial for a conviction. “This case is not only important to us personally, for obvious reasons, but to the general, just with regard to retaining or restoring some kind of faith in our justice system.”
Defence argued Robinson’s rights were infringed upon the night he was taken into custody in late October 2008, but the judge disagreed, noting his specialized training at processing impaired drivers.
Crown is arguing Robinson knows how to avoid drunk-driving charges.
Robinson’s obstruction of justice trial resumes on Friday and Crown is expected to call its last witness Monday.
