GO Transit fares go up Saturday

It will cost at least 30 cents more to ride GO trains and buses starting Saturday.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency that runs GO Transit, approved the fare hike based on distance last month, saying it needed to meet the demand of its growing ridership.

The cost of a single adult fare will rise as follows:

  • Fares between $4.20 and $5.50 will go up 30 cents
  • Fares between $5.51 and $7 will go up 35 cents
  • Fares more than $7 will go up 40 cents

Adults will now save 15 per cent off the cost of a 40-ticket monthly pass instead of 18 per cent. But Presto users will still save 17.5 per cent when they buy 40 tickets.

The increase — which will go towards more parking spaces, better service and maintenance — is expected to bring in about $19.5 million a year.

“A fare increase this year is necessary to ensure that GO Transit can continue to provide good customer service, expand services and manage increased costs in areas like fuel and hydro.” Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig said in a statement.

Fares last went up in March 2010.
