Law student charged in connection with York U shooting on Saturday

TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police have arrested a first-year law student in connection with the shooting at York University on Saturday.

Andrew MacDonald, 35, is facing 10 charges, including mischief and discharging a firearm endangering life.

The university’s vice-president of finance and administration, Gary Brewer spoke about the arrest at the news conference Thursday morning.

“It is deeply concerning to all of us that the alleged suspect — a member of our student community has seriously compromised the safety of everyone at York,” Brewer said.

No one was hurt when a shot was fired through the door of a residence on Assiniboine Road.

Police said the target, a 31-year-old graduate student, does not know the suspect.

“So far, we have no connection between him and the victim. We’re conducting a lot of interviews. I’ve had a dozen officers working on this since last Saturday,” Toronto police Det.-Sgt. Al Coulter said.

Det.-Sgt. Coulter is asking anyone who knows MacDonald or has any information on the case to call police or Crime Stoppers.
