Video of men loading murder victim Anthony Spencer into car released

Toronto police released security video showing a group of men loading murder victim Anthony Spencer into a waiting car after he’d been shot at a Scarborough recording studio last month, in yet another attempt by the force to break the wall of silence in the case.

Spencer, a 23-year-old father, was fatally shot once at close range around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 21 at the studio on Brimley Road near Lawrence Avenue East. After the shooting, police say Spencer’s “friends” drove him to Scarborough General Hospital and then took off.

The men in the video are being urged to come forward and speak with investigators. The security footage shows five men carrying Spencer and putting him into the car. Three men get in the vehicle, while two others return to the studio, including one man shown in a winter hat with ear flaps who offers some sort of direction to the people in the car.

“They’ve been his friends for many years,” Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux said of the men seen in the video. “They’re not casual acquaintances or associates.”

Earlier this month, police released a security image of a young woman detectives consider a person of interest in the case. She was captured on a surveillance camera making calls on her cellphone around the time of the murder. Police also released a call she made to a cab company the night of the shooting in which a gunshot can be heard in the background. She’s been urged to get a lawyer and contact authorities.

Police have previously urged Spencer’s friends to put aside their fears and demonstrate their loyalty by talking to investigators about what happened that night.

Two men were arrested in connection to the case and are being held for alleged firearms offences, Giroux said. Detectives said they’ve linked Spencer’s murder to three driveby shootings in Malvern in January.
