Class-action lawsuits filed after glass falls from downtown condos

Two separate class-action lawsuits have been launched after glass fell from several downtown condos last summer.
The two lawsuits represent owners and renters in the Murano Towers and the Festival Tower, who, according to the lawsuit, have not been able to use their balconies since the August 2011 incidents.
“Our goal is to compensate the class members for the loss of use of their outdoor living space and to motivate the builders to correct the problem as soon as possible,” “Ted Charney, a partner of Falconer Charney LLP, said in a statement.
Glass fell from the Festival Tower, which is atop the Bell Lightbox at King and John streets, on Aug. 2, 2011.
In that case, the lawsuit names developer King and John Festival Corp., The Daniels Corp., KPMB Design Inc., Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, Kirkor Architects & Planners, Toronto International Film Festival Developments Inc., Toro Aluminum Railings Inc. and Toro Glasswall Inc. Toro is the manufacturer and installer of the balcony railings.
A woman was hurt when glass fell from one of the Murano Towers on Aug. 15, 2011. It was the latest in a string of incidents: glass fell from the building’s north tower, 37 Grosvenor St. as many as eight times before the pedestrian was hurt.
The second lawsuit names developer Bay Grenville Properties Ltd., Lanterra Devlopments Ltd., Toro Aluminum Railings Inc., architectsAlliance and H&R Developments Inc.
