Radulov return causes a stir at GM meetings

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Alex Radulov’s potential return to the NHL is causing almost as much controversy as his departure.
With NHL general managers gathered for their annual March meeting, almost all of the buzz surrounded the league’s decision to allow the 25-year-old Russian forward to rejoin the Nashville Predators without clearing waivers.
The decision was made in conjunction with NHL Players’ Association and relayed to the GMs by deputy commissioner Bill Daly. Some weren’t happy.
Radulov bolted the Predators in 2008 for the Russian-based KHL even though he had one year remaining on his entry-level contract.
If he rejoins Nashville for the stretch drive — GM David Poile believes it’s on the verge of happening — the final year of that deal would be burned, making him a restricted free agent this summer.
The GMs also decided to move forward and recommend a new hybrid icing rule with the specific language of the rule still to be hammered out. That’s expected to happen before the competition committee meets in June.
