Charter Direct Air suspends flights for 2 months

Discount airline Direct Air has suspended flights for the next two months and left Canadians flying to the U.S. for March Break, and those already there, scrambling to make alternate plans.

The airline, popular with southern Ontarians travelling to Florida, stopped operations on Tuesday and said it would be running again in May.

“Direct Air finds it necessary to suspend flight operation from Tuesday, March 13, 2012 until May 15, 2012,” the company said on its website.

“This decision was made to address operational matters. We are currently evaluating strategic alternatives for Direct Air.”

Kitchener, Ont., resident Connie MacDonald, whose family was due to fly out of Buffalo, N.Y. on Thursday, told 680News she has been left scrambling.

“We actually just found out (Tuesday),” she said.

“I was at work and started hearing reports on Twitter, on the news, that Direct Air was cancelling flights. And it wasn’t until I think about 1 p.m. or so that I found out that they’ve cancelled all flights until May.”

A company spokesperson told a U.S. newspaper the airline had missed a payment and had its fuel supply cut off.

Direct Air is advising its passengers to call their credit card companies for a refund or, if already in the U.S., find another flight home.
