‘Hunger Games’ premise intense, violent, parenting expert warns

The premise of the hotly anticipated movie The Hunger Games has many parents worried, and for good reason: the film concerns young teenagers who are forced to fight to the death on live television.

“It’s [based on] a pretty intense, pretty serious, pretty violent book,” Today’s Parent magazine executive editor Sandra E. Martin told CityNews.

“Children are killing other children.”

The movie is based on the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins, and tells the story of a futuristic dystopia where young citizens from neighbouring districts face off against each other in a televised battle to the death.

It’s the first in a trilogy, followed by Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

However, one psychologist says parents shouldn’t be worried.

“I don’t think there’s any evidence that watching violence, if it’s fictional, is going to cause any effects, unless it upsets that child,” professor John Freedman said.

Would you take your kids to see the movie? Have your say in the comments.
