Investigation indicates train passed stop signal before fatal Amsterdam head-on collision

AMSTERDAM – The Dutch government says initial investigations indicate a train passed a stop signal Saturday shortly before slamming head-on into another train in Amsterdam, killing one passenger and injuring dozens more.
Infrastructure Minister Melanie Schultz said in a letter to Parliament on Monday further investigations will be needed to confirm if one of the drivers missed a red light.
A double-decker intercity train collided with a commuter train Saturday evening, throwing passengers through carriages and against one another.
More than 40 people were seriously injured and 16 remained hospitalized a day later. Scores more escaped with minor injuries.
The head of the national railway travel network called the collision one of the worst crashes in recent Dutch history.
