Metrolinx to discuss LRT transit plan Wednesday

The death of Mayor Rob Ford’s subway plan, and the resurrection of former Mayor David Miller’s light rail transit (LRT) vision, could be official on Wednesday.

That’s when the Metrolinx board will discuss a staff report outlining the transit plan endorsed by city council.

Council’s decision to invest in LRTs infuriated Mayor Ford and his allies, who were vehemently fighting for subways.

The Metrolinx report to be discussed Wednesday recommends construction on the Sheppard East Light-rail transit (LRT) line begin in 2014, the year of the next municipal election, and be complete by 2018.

Construction on the Finch West LRT would begin a year later, and be ready to run in 2019.

The report also recommends construction on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT continue with a goal of completion by 2020.

The Scarborough RT replacement and extension would start in 2014 and be finished 2019.

The full project is expected to cost $8.4 billion.
