Genie, Gemini award shows will be merged in 2013

The Genies and the Geminis will soon be merged into one massive award show next year.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced the decision Tuesday, saying there would be a single two-hour broadcast on March 3, 2013, covering both events as well as Canada’s digital media industry.

Academy chair Martin Katz said it would be a “powerhouse” show.

“Following extensive industry consultation and outreach, the Academy Board is consolidating the Genie and Gemini awards into one,” Katz said.

A new name for the show and its trophy have not yet been announced.

The Genie Awards celebrate Canadian film while the Gemini Awards celebrate homegrown television.

Programs that are currently eligible for a 2012 Gemini will be part of next year’s awards show, while the annual Gémeaux Awards will go ahead as planned on Sept. 16. The Gémeaux Awards, which celebrate French-language television and digital media, will be included in the 2014 show.
