Teen charged in Markham murder

York region police have charged a 17-year-old boy with first-degree murder after a man was fatally stabbed in Markham early Sunday morning.

Allen Constance, 28, was attacked in the parking lot of the Markham Village library, on Highway 7 near Markham Road, around 3 a.m. and pronounced dead in hospital.

The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He will appear in court Monday.

“They were known to each other in some way. It was not a random occurrence. We’re not looking at anything that’s going to put the public safety in jeopardy,” said P.C. Rebecca Boyd, York Regional police.

Police are looking for witnesses. Meanwhile, the incident has rattled the community.

“We were a little shocked. It’s a very quiet neighbourhood. This doesn’t happen in our neighbourhood, ” said area resident Paul Georges.

“Unfortunately a mother has to find out about that this morning,” said neighbour Kacey Young. “She should have been spending time with her son, and now she can’t.”

Police tell CityNews the scene will be closed to the public through the overnight Sunday, into Monday morning.
