Barrie residents won’t be home for days after more explosives found

About 60 residents displaced from their neighbourhood in Barrie will be homeless longer than expected.

Twenty-two homes were evacuated after police in Barrie found a stash of improvised explosive devices, a bunker and unidentified liquids at a home on Virgilwood Crescent.

The Barrie police explosive disposal unit was still searching for dangerous materials on Sunday, after they came across devices hidden in the house Saturday.

Since Friday, between 15 and 20 explosives have been detonated, and police expect there will be more by the time the search is over.

“Yesterday we removed a large number of homemade explosive devices, and the officers on scene expect to find more today,” Sgt. Tim Conroy said on Sunday.

It was originally hoped the evacuees would be able to return home Monday.

“It appears they won’t be back for several days,” Conroy said. “We don’t have a specific timeline, but due to the number of explosive devices we’re locating, we’re assuming there is going to be more.

“This is slowing down the process for folks being able to move back into their residence.”

The house in question belongs to Donald Feldhoff, 54, who has now been charged with first-degree murder in a cold-case dating back to 1978.

The man’s 75-year-old father, William, who also lives at the home, has been charged as an accessory in that murder.
