TIMELINE: Shootings of innocent bystanders in Toronto

Two people were killed and 21 others, including an infant, were shot and wounded on Monday night when gunfire erupted at a community barbecue in Scarborough.

Toronto police chief Bill Blair called the violence “unprecedented.”

Meanwhile, Toronto has experienced many shootings in recent years involving innocent bystanders.

Here’s a list of incidents:

July 16, 2012:
Shyanne Charles, 14, and Joshua Yasay, 23, were killed when they were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight at a community barbecue on Danzig Street in Scarborough. Twenty-three other people were wounded during the worst mass shooting in Toronto’s history.

June 2, 2012: Hundreds of people ran for their lives when shots rang out inside the Eaton Centre food court. Ahmed Hassan, 24, and Nixon Nirmalendran, 22, were killed and five others were wounded. Christopher Husbands is charged in the case.

May 21, 2009: A five-year-old girl shot was hit in the back by a stray bullet while she was inside her Bellevue Crescent home, near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue.

Jan. 12, 2008: John O’Keefe, 42, was hit by a stray bullet and killed while walking past the Brass Rail strip club on Yonge Street on his way to the subway. The intended target was a bouncer who had thrown Edward Paredes and Awet Zekarias out of the bar. Paredes is serving a sentence for second-degree murder and Awet Zekarias for manslaughter.

July 22, 2007: Ephraim Brown, 11, is killed when he’s caught in the crossfire of a gang gunfight that broke out at a birthday party in the Jane and Sheppard area. Two men charged in the case were acquitted in 2010.

Dec. 26, 2005: Jane Creba, 15, was shopping with family on Yonge Street when she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between rival gangs. Jorrell Simpson-Rowe and Jeremiah Valentine were found guilty of second-degree murder. Louis Woodcock and Tyshaun Barnett were convicted of manslaughter.

Oct. 15, 2005: TTC driver Jaime Pereira was shot in the head while playing peacemaker to a group of troublemakers who were fighting outside his bus near Morningside and Sewells. The married father of two was left blind in one eye and lost most of the sight in the other. Malcolm Chalmers was found guilty of aggravated assault and use of a firearm.

July 19, 2005: Nineteen-year-old bystander Kimarni Downer was hit by a stray bullet in the gunfire that killed Shamari Belnavis, 20, near Weston Road and Black Creek Drive.

Aug. 3, 2005: Then-five-year-old Shaquan Cadougan was shot in the leg during a drive-by shooting on Driftwood Avenue in North York during the height of Toronto’s so-called Summer of the Gun. Shaquan was sitting outside with his family when he was shot. He has since fully recovered.

Nov. 28, 2004: Tamara Carter, 11, was on a TTC bus with her mother when she was shot in the head by a stray bullet. The intended target was a 24-year-old man who had stood up to a group of men harassing other passengers. Tamara lost some of the sight in her left eye as a result of the incident.

April 21, 2004: Mother-of-three Louise Russo was the unintended victim of a drive-by shooting while at plaza near Sheppard Avenue West and Allen Road. A bullet shattered the 45-year-old’s spine and left her paralyzed. She now works as an anti-violence advocate.

Feb. 10, 2000: An 18-year-old bystander was shot in the abdomen when gunfire erupted in the parking lot of Toronto’s Emery Collegiate Institute, near Finch Avenue West and Weston Road. Four young men were arrested.

June 13, 1999: Three-year-old Breanna Davy was killed when a bullet intended for her father hit her in the head while she was in a parked car near Jane and Finch. Craig Patrick was sentenced to life in prison for the toddler’s death.

April 5, 1994: Georgina “Vivi” Leimonis, 23, was fatally shot in the chest during a robbery at the midtown café Just Desserts. Lawrence Brown was convicted of first-degree murder and robbery, and Gary Francis was convicted of manslaughter and robbery.
