Canada suffered its second loss to the United States in as many days, following Monday’s women’s soccer game, when the women’s national basketball team lost its quarter-final game against the Americans on Tuesday 98-41. The Canucks won two of six games in the tournament.

Canada’s flag-bearer at the London Summer Games, Simon Whitfield, had his Olympic hopes dashed on Tuesday when he crashed during the early stages of the cycling portion of the triathlon.

Chinese track star Liu Xiang also suffered a serious disappointment when he crashed on the first gate during the men’s 110 metre hurdles event. He’s the 2004 Olympic champ and former world record holder.

Canadian diver Alexandre Despatie finished 11th overall in the men’s three-metre spring board after placing eighth in Tuesday’s semi-final.

Despatie suffered a head injury during a diving accident in June.

Fellow Canuck Francois Imbeau-Dulac placed 13th and won’t move on.
