Andy Murray withdraws from Rogers Cup; Raonic automatically advances

Britain’s Andy Murray has withdrawn from Toronto’s Rogers Cup due to a knee injury.

The announcement came Thursday afternoon from Tennis Canada.

The London Olympics gold medalist was supposed to play Thornhill’s Milos Raonic on Thursday. The news means that Raonic will automatically advance to the quarter-finals.

Last week, superstars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament. On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova withdrew from the Rogers Cup due a stomach ailment.

The Rogers Cup is currently in action at York University’s Rexall Centre until Aug. 12.
