Toronto again named world’s 4th most liveable city

Toronto has again made the Top 5 in a list of the most liveable cities in the world, according to a new report by The Economist magazine.

The city placed fourth on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s ranking of 140 cities for the second year in a row, behind Melbourne, Vienna and Vancouver and ahead of Calgary.

“I think Torontonians and Canadian citizens have to recognize that the things that make our cities livable have to be maintained and have to be protected,” Toronto architect Michael McClelland said.

“The investment is incredible here, the amount of immigration is incredible here. It’s really outstripping any other North American city.”

The scores, between zero and 100, are based on factors including crime, access to healthcare and education, public transportation, religious restrictions and weather.

The survey’s authors said the cities that score best tend to be mid-sized and in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density.

They also said 63 cities are considered in the top tier and only 1.8 percentage points separate the 10 best.

Dhaka, Bangladesh, was ranked the least liveable, but the survey does not include cities like Kabul and Baghdad, as the authors only included places they think people might want to live in or visit.
