One person is dead and another person is unaccounted for following a fire at an assisted living facility in the Carlton and Church area.
Fire crews were called to a three-alarm blaze around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The blaze broke out on the ninth floor of Tobias House, located at 84 Carlton Street.
Residents of the building told CityNews the victim was a man in his late 30s who used a mechanical wheelchair. Paramedics say the victim lived in the unit where the fire began.
District chief Paul Halls told CityNews the fire has been controlled.
“We’ve knocked this fire down, we’ve controlled the fire, we’ve evacuated the building and kept the rest of the occupants safe,” he said
Halls said the result of the blaze could have been worse.
“Tonight it appears we may have lost one person but we got lucky here tonight. This was a serious fire,” he explained.
Halls said crews inspected the other units to ensure no one else was injured.
The 506 Carlton streetcars were diverted both on Carleton until shortly after 11:30 p.m.
Tobias House is home to people with disabilities and seniors.
