Residents in the Jane and Finch area are holding a protest against the York University newspaper after comments from its editor that problems on campus stem from area residents and not students.
Demonstrators from Jane Finch Action Against Poverty (JFAAP) accused Michael Sholars of blaming area residents for the school’s crime rate.
“I don’t care what statistics are brought up to argue that the York campus is just as safe as any other city; the problems are coming from the area immediately surrounding our campus, one of the most infamous high-crime areas in the country,” Sholars wrote in his letter from the editor in the March 29 issue of The Excalibur.
JFAAP called the statement “wrong and discriminatory.” The protest ran from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Keele Campus.
Sholars could not be immediately reached for an interview.
The protest was to be followed by the group’s regular bi-monthy meeting at Black Creek Community Health Centre in Yorkgate Mall.
