Ravi Shankar dead at 92

India’s prime minister has confirmed that sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar has died at age 92.

Shankar reportedly checked himself into a San Diego hospital on Thursday with breathing troubles.

He became a hippie musical icon of the 1960s after hobnobbing with the Beatles and who introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences over an eight-decade career.

Shankar was married twice and had three children, Anoushka Shankar, Shubhendra Shankar, and Grammy Award winning singer Norah Jones.
