Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet on Wednesday, thanking his followers and blessing them in his inaugural message.
Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.
— Benedict XVI (@Pontifex) December 12, 2012
The message was sent after the weekly General Audience at the Vatican.
Eventually, the tweets will be going out in eight languages: Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French.
The Vatican announced that the pontiff would be joining Twitter on Dec. 3. Since then, he has racked up over 660,000 followers on his English-language account.
The Vatican has been making more efforts to connect with young Catholics in recent years, starting a Facebook page in 2009 and releasing a “Gangnam Style” Advent video.
